How to Specify Waterproof and Breathability Ratings for Outdoor Shell Fabrics

A buyer-focused explanation of hydrostatic pressure, water-vapour testing and the questions that make fabric performance data comparable.

Define the product claim before choosing a number

A higher laboratory value is not automatically the best specification. A resort ski shell, a cycling rain jacket and a lightweight hiking layer have different exposure, movement and price requirements. Start by defining the conditions the garment must handle and the claim that will appear in sales material.

The material brief should also record fabric weight, stretch, hand feel, durability and care expectations. Selecting only by waterproof and breathability figures can produce a fabric that passes one test but does not suit the intended garment.

Read waterproof results together with the method

Hydrostatic-pressure testing measures the resistance of a material to water penetration under increasing pressure. The result is commonly reported as a water-column height, but the apparatus, procedure, sample preparation and endpoint still matter. Record the standard and report reference next to every target value.

Ask whether the result applies to the original fabric or to material tested after washing, abrasion or another pre-treatment. If durability is part of the product promise, the test plan should include an agreed after-care condition rather than relying only on a new-fabric result.

  • Which standard and laboratory were used?
  • Was the fabric tested before or after washing?
  • Does the result apply to every colour and finish?
  • What acceptance value will be used for bulk production?

Breathability numbers are not always directly comparable

Water-vapour performance can be reported through different test families and units. Some methods report the amount of vapour transferred over time, while resistance-based methods report how strongly the material resists vapour movement. A larger number may therefore mean better performance in one system and worse performance in another.

Do not convert a competitor’s marketing figure into a factory specification without knowing the method behind it. Use one agreed method for development and bulk approval, and compare materials tested under the same conditions.

Translate fabric data into a finished-garment plan

A waterproof fabric does not make every jacket waterproof. Stitching creates needle holes, openings need protective construction, and seam tape must match the fabric coating and care conditions. Define which seams are taped, the required tape width and the garment-level tests that will be used.

Breathability can also be affected by lining, insulation, pocket bags and print coverage. Review the full material stack rather than treating the face fabric as an isolated component.

The strongest supplier conversations use a short, traceable specification rather than a collection of disconnected screenshots and marketing claims.

  • End use, climate and target retail tier
  • Material construction, weight and usable width
  • Waterproof method, target and pre-treatment
  • Water-vapour method, unit and target
  • Colourfastness, dimensional stability and care requirements
  • Bulk approval report and retained reference sample
